Getting to Know Your Hometown

Don’t have enough money to go out of town, paying for meals, hotels, and other R&R hidden costs?  Or do you find that often times you get so involved with taking care of the menial tasks that fill up a weekend that you forget to recognize the beauty that is in your backyard?  I am sad to say that I forget to take in the local wonders, looking at out-of-town attractions when I haven’t really learned to appreciate what I have in my own zip code.  My husband and I rarely head downtown unless there is a specific destination that we have in mind.  Sadly, I can count the number of times we have headed in that direction on one hand.  Woefully sheltered as it turns out.

Thanks are due to a colleague of mine who organized a downtown Jacksonville scavenger hunt/fundraiser for our students.  It was a modified version of the hit show, “The Amazing Race,” and my husband and I were captains of one of the seven teams of high school students who were sent around the streets and highlights of downtown Jacksonville.

It was a great afternoon and I really enjoyed bonding with my students in this new environment.  Another bonus was that our team won, but the real victory came in seeing our new hometown in a new light.
