It’s a Happy (Birth) Day!

Happy Thursday, Fancy Oatmeal Readers!  THE most important thing about today is that it’s my wonderful husband and best friend’s birthday!

It’s a little bit difficult to go “all out” for a birthday when living on St. Paul Island: there are no sporting events to take Dear Hubby to, restaurants to be embarrassed by a lethargic rendition of, “Happy Happy Birthday to you” from a waitstaff, or a wife who has enough energy to bake a decent cake for the occasion.

I laugh out loud every time I see this picture on Pinterest.

But I think that I chose well for his gifts: the first season of The Game of Thrones on DVD

and this little gizmo

This is Dear Hubby’s first iPhone, and somewhat of a Catch 22 to get this for his birthday.  Yes, it’s an awesome phone and definitely an upgrade from the sad and forgotten 2009 iTouch in the background.  However, he won’t be able to activate it until we’re in Michigan because Alaska doesn’t have Verizon service.  #FirstWorldBirthdayProblems.

I’m not sure what the birthday meal is going to be tonight, but I’m pretty sure it’ll be along the lines of Digornio followed up by Ben and Jerry’s.

In other happy news, this morning I was *THIS* close to schlumping off my AM run for the comfort of the couch.  I pulled out all the old strategies that typically work to get my mind right:

1. Bribe – “If you run, I’ll let you get a treat at the store today!”

2. Compromise – “If you get up and run, you only have to run one mile instead of four.”

3. Bullying – “You know you need to do this, Dummy.  Quit being a lazy turd and get on the damn treadmill.”

4. Positive Reinforcement – “You’re such a great runner, and your times have been amazing this week!  Keep up all the good work you’ve been doing and check off your Four-Miler!  You can do it!”

Begrudgingly to all five voices in my head, I got off the couch, put on my running gear, and started off on my run.  THANK THE LORD I did because I went from feeling like this:

to feeling like this:

Here was the summary of the run that almost wasn’t:

and I won a medal!!!

What’s going on in your neck to the woods today?

How do you motivate yourself to get in a workout?

Any special ways you celebrate birthdays in your home?
