New Sea Parrots Digs

On March 28, 2012 the St. Paul Island community participated in a gym dedication ceremony, presenting the culmination of years of dedicated work from the St. Paul School Board, Superintendent Jamie Stacks, and financial backing from the Central Bering Sea Fishermen’s Association, American Seafoods Company, and the Rasmuson Foundation.

There was much anticipation building up to this ceremony; delayed flights due to godawful weather kept prolonging the event.  The excitement was trumped up by the dramatic effect of shutting off the overhead lighting, allowing the scoreboard’s glow to provide a theatrical tone to the room.

The ceremony was very touching as so many entities came together to make this gym remodel a reality.

I won't insert a "cut the cheese/ribbon" comment cuz I'm classy like that.

Once the gym was officially reopened, the first Sea Parrots basketball game took place.  Ironically, it would also mark the last official game for the team, and two of the senior players.  The grand finale of the season is always accompanied by a pep rally.

I wish I had better examples of the “Before” gym, but this video does a great job of highlighting the New and Improved:

  1. I know when I was in my teens, they showed Monty Python on the local PBS stiaton (that’s the U.S. public broadcasting, private nonprofit network), and I thought it was one of the oddest and funniest things I’d ever seen!
