Good morning, Fancy Oatmeal Readers!

Put another Super Bowl in the record books, and add another reason why I love living in Alaska; the “I want to thank my teammates, coaches, and fans” speeches were all done and over with before 6:30pm.  That gave me time to torture Dear Hubby with an episode of “Shameless” before crashing for the night.  I don’t know if he was coming down from a sporting extravaganza high, or was sad that he lost $10 by going against his wife’s advice choosing the Patriots to win, but he didn’t fuss much.

Last year, Dear Hubby and I watched the first half of the game at home, and then tested out the island tavern for the second.  Keep in mind that on an island of 400 people, and a good quarter of those are your students, you don’t want to spend a whole lot of time in the bar, so this year we decided to invite some of our teacher friends over.

One thing that I learned about my husband is that as long as he can watch sports, I can pretty much ask him to do any household chore that needs to be done, and he’s a pretty darn good multitasked.  It helps that our living room, kitchen, dining room, and TV are all in the same space within the house.  So during the Michigan State vs. Michigan basketball game, the floors and counter tops were spiffied up, while I helped to prepare the pizza crusts, assorted goodies, and ran a quick 5K before the troops came over.

It was an interesting gathering of friends; we had some folks who were avid fans of sports in general, a few former NFL “because my family watched it” fans, and a few who might very well have been watching their very first Super Bowl ever.  Like I said, it was interesting to see this group melt together, but we had an awesome time!

I served whole wheat pizza crusts, and everyone got to assemble their own, custom pie, chips and salsa, veggies, Oreo cookies, and various dips.  Everyone chipped in and brought goodies as well.  It was a great afternoon of snacking, chatting, and football cheering.
